What Are Dental Implants?

Introduction

Dental implants are metal frames that are surgically placed underneath the gums inside the jaw. This frame then serves as a mounting point for replacement teeth. If you are considering a dental implant, there are many options at your disposal. Keep reading to learn more about dental implants and how they work.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are connected directly to the jawbone to provide support for artificial teeth. This makes it possible for the recipient to make full use of their new teeth, including eating and talking, without fearing that the teeth with shift around in their mouth. This also ensures that the dentures and bridges feel completely normal and comfortable.

In order to receive new dental implants, it is important for the recipient to have healthy gums and sufficient bone structure to support the dental implants. The recipient should also ensure that their new replacement teeth and implants are cared for and properly maintained with sufficient oral care.

Implant Process

Dental implanting requires oral surgery that is performed while the patient is sedated. During this procedure, a small hole is drilled in the jawbone and the base of the dental implant is screwed into the bone. The gum is then released over the implant.

When the implant has healed, a second surgery is scheduled to fit the connectors to the top of the implants. The crowns are then placed on top of the connectors with dental cement and a screw.

Implant Types

There are two types of dental implants that are typically used.

Endosteal Implants

This type of implant is surgically fitted to the jawbone. One the implant is healed sufficiently; the artificial tooth is fitted to the implant itself.

Subperiosteal Implants

This is a metal frame that is connected to the jawbone below the gums. When the gums are healed, the frame will be completely attached to the jawbone. The posts that are attached to the frame will stick out through the gums so that the artificial teeth can be fitted to the posts.

It is not up to the patient to choose the appropriate type of dental implants. Your periodontist will decide on the type and material of implants that are appropriate for you. Dental implants have reached new levels of sophistication in recent years, and you can be sure to receive high-end dental implants and additional treatment.

Can I Receive Dental Implants?

Make an appointment with your dentist to discuss whether you are a good candidate for a dental implant. Before receiving a dental implant, it is important that you are in good overall health. Your bone structure should also be strong enough to support implants and your gums should be healthy. If you are not able to wear dentures, undergoing dental implant surgery may be a viable alternative, especially if you maintain good overall dental health and you don’t smoke. Other chronic problems such as bruxism and diabetes may reduce the success rate for successful dental implant surgery.
